The challenges we face

Our ongoing research, for example with UNICEF in Mexico, has revealed three main issues. First, poor toilet hygiene is a serious concern for teachers, parents, and students due to its impact on health. Second, teachers believe children aren’t learning key hygiene habits—like washing hands and keeping toilets clean—early enough. Third, many children avoid using school toilets, leading to unhealthy behaviors that compromise their well-being.

These problems affect schools across the UK, regardless of socio-economic background. Without proper attention to hygiene, children’s education and health suffer, placing added pressure on teachers to manage these challenges.

Why better hygiene matters

Good hygiene isn’t just a health issue—it’s an economic one. Poor hygiene can result in increased absenteeism and reduced productivity, impacting educational outcomes and, ultimately, the economy. When preventable illnesses keep children out of school, learning is disrupted and staff face extra strain.

But we believe better hygiene doesn’t have to mean more spending. By leveraging the knowledge of teachers, parents, and hygiene experts, we can find cost-effective, practical solutions. Collaborating with schools and educational bodies, we aim to raise hygiene standards, reduce absenteeism, and support children’s confidence and learning.

Our commitment

Essity has been involved in the Global Handwashing Partnership (GHP) since 2017 and evolved into a strategic partner in October 2020. The purpose of this partnership is to promote handwashing and recognize hand hygiene as a means of well-being and public health. Part of our commitment is to continue supporting schools and work environments through our thought leadership in hand hygiene, but also by donations of toilet paper.

Teaching good hygiene can be a challenge, so we’ve put together Ella’s Handwashing School package, which includes an app, hygiene brochures, teaching material as well as activities to help make hand washing a little more fun.

Our goal is clear: better hygiene means healthier, happier children, stronger educational outcomes, and less pressure on school staff. By working together, we can make meaningful changes that benefit everyone.
